Classroom Expectations
Respect and support all people associated with our music program, music classrooms, and school community. If you have a conflict with another student or adult, please speak to the director. Vulgar, demeaning, or hateful language intended to cause harm, intimidate, or make someone uncomfortable will not be tolerated. Any physical acts that intimidate or cause harm to another will not be tolerated. Remember that you not only represent yourself, but our music programs, and our school.
We will start and end all rehearsals on time. During a normal rehearsal, students will be given 2 minutes to get their instrument and supplies and 3 minutes to put instruments or supplies away.
Engage in all activities in our classroom. This includes bell work, sharing either through writing or verbally, ask questions, performing, reading music, or creating.
Food, drinks, or candy are not allowed in the band room, ensemble room/library, practice rooms, or the storage room unless authorized by a director. Chewing gum is considered a food item. Water is fine as long as it is in a container with a lid.
Respect the instruments and belongings of others. Refrain from touching, moving, or playing another person’s instrument. This also includes the percussion equipment.
At the end of rehearsal, time will be given for you to return your materials. I ask that students remain in the main space of the classroom and not line up at the door.
Respect school property. This includes instruments, music stands, and all of the facilities we perform in. Return any items you move to perform or participate in class with. Clean up any trash created by playing or rehearsing. Refrain from writing on stands or walls.
Take proper care of your instrument and our equipment at all times. This includes cleaning mouthpieces, maintaining reeds, swabbing woodwinds if available, oiling valves and trombone slides, and applying slide cream to slides. Instruments are to be kept in their cases and stored in their designated locker or storage area.
Percussionists, your equipment should always be put away, covered, or set aside, and handled with care. Please help keep the percussion area neat.

Classroom Management Procedures
A “check system” will be used in our band classroom. The “checks” that a student may receive are to help us understand what consequence will be delivered for the behaviors we are choosing.
The first check is a warning.
The second check is an in-class consequence. The consequence will reflect what is needed. I.e. the student's’ seat will be moved, they will be asked to gather themselves in a quiet space.
The third check will result in parents being called and we will work together to create a plan to help the student change their behavior.
The fourth check will result in a detention with the school.
The fifth check will result in a student being asked to leave the classroom and speak with an administrator.
It is up to the teacher’s discretion to provide a higher consequence for more serious behaviors. A student’s parent will be contacted immediately, and a consequence provided for repeated behaviors, destruction or damage of property, vulgar or disrespectful language to adults or peers, intentional physical acts that intimidate or cause harm to another, and bullying of another student in the classroom. This list is just an example, and other behaviors could result in similar consequences.
